Sri Ramana Maharshi (1879–1950) was a renowned Indian sage and philosopher whose life and teachings continue to inspire millions globally. Born Venkataraman Iyer in Tiruchuli, Tamil Nadu, he is widely regarded as one of the most significant spiritual figures of the 20th century.
At the age of 16, while living in Madurai, Venkataraman underwent a transformative "death experience." Seized by a sudden, intense fear of death, he chose to "dramatize" it by lying still and imagining his body as a corpse. During this process, he realized that while the body dies, the "I" or the Self remains eternal and untouched. This spontaneous self-realization changed him forever.
Driven by a powerful inner pull, he left home shortly after his awakening and traveled to the holy mountain Arunachala in Tiruvannamalai. He remained there for the rest of his life, initially living in various caves—such as Virupaksha Cave and Skandashram—in deep silence and meditation.
Sri Ramana was known for his extreme humility, his love for animals, and his insistence that self-realization is not a new achievement but the discovery of our natural state. He passed away in 1950, but his ashram remains a vibrant center for meditation and study.
